About the project

Hires was the first app I built for George Cox & Sons, back in 2013.

Like most contractors, they hire in plant and machinery from different suppliers and spread it across their jobs. Hires keeps track of all of it: what’s on hire, where it is, who it’s with, what it costs, and when it went back.

For each hire it records:

  • The machine type, supplier, fleet number and the supplier’s own reference
  • The job and supervisor it’s with, and every move between jobs
  • The rate, transport charges, delivery and collection, exchanges and the off-hire number
  • The supplier’s invoice number, and the invoices themselves

The office can see everything on hire as a list or on a calendar, export it to Excel, and run a report of hires by job. A summary is emailed to the office every Monday morning.

It also looks after the company’s own vehicles and plant, with each vehicle’s repairs and running costs, and the company’s yards.
